Bowling has seen its share of flamboyant personalities, fiery celebrations, and legendary rivalries. Yet, amid the larger-than-life figures, there exists a name that commands deep respect without the theatrics, Mike Aulby.

A bowler of rare skill and consistency, Aulby let his performances do the talking. While the world applauded those who thrived on showmanship, he quietly built a career that remains one of the most impressive in the history of the sport.

Aulby was never one to seek the limelight, but his achievements made it impossible to ignore him.

With a career spanning decades, he secured titles across different generations, adapting to changes in the game with remarkable ease. Those who watched him bowl recognised a master at work, precise, composed, and unshaken by pressure. His influence extended beyond statistics, setting a benchmark for technique and mental fortitude.

Despite his staggering list of accolades, Aulby’s name often remains in the background when discussions arise about the sport’s greatest figures.

He was never a self-promoter, never one to engage in controversy or loud displays of dominance. But perhaps that is exactly why his story deserves to be told.

A Champion from the Start

Mike Aulby was born on March 25, 1960, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His rise in the bowling world was rapid, displaying a level of precision and discipline uncommon for someone so young.

By the age of 19, he had already turned professional, marking the beginning of a journey that would see him carve out one of the most successful careers in Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) history.

Aulby’s breakthrough moment came in 1979 when he won the PBA Rookie of the Year award. It was not merely a recognition of potential but a sign that he belonged among the elite.

Many young bowlers struggle in their first years on the tour, but Aulby displayed a maturity beyond his age. His left-handed delivery, smooth release, and uncanny ability to read lanes allowed him to compete at a level few could match.

By 1982, he had already secured his first major championship, winning the PBA National Championship.

This victory not only confirmed his arrival but laid the foundation for what would become a career filled with landmark achievements. Unlike many players who experience peaks and dips, Aulby maintained a steady rise, adding title after title to his name.

While others dominated headlines with their personalities, Aulby preferred to let his game do the speaking. He was never the loudest in the room, but when he stepped onto the lanes, silence was often the only reaction he evoked, silent admiration for a bowler whose style was the definition of effortlessness.

Mastering the Game

Bowling at the highest level demands more than just skill. Every lane is different, oil patterns change and competitors are relentless. The game is won and lost in the smallest details, adjusting for conditions, reading the lanes, and maintaining control under pressure. Mike Aulby mastered all of it.

Precision was his trademark. Every shot had a purpose, every movement calculated. He wasn’t the kind of bowler who relied on brute force to overpower the pins. His approach was about accuracy, consistency, and a deep understanding of the game.

The way he released the ball was smooth, almost effortless, yet it carried enough energy to send pins scattering. The balance in his technique gave him control that few could match.

Reading oil patterns is one of the most important aspects of professional bowling. The distribution of oil on the lane dictates how the ball moves, and failing to adjust can turn a good game into a disaster.

Aulby had an eye for these details. He recognised changes quickly and adapted without hesitation. His adjustments were subtle, a slight shift in positioning, a minor change in speed, a controlled alteration in rotation. These decisions, made in real time, set him apart.

His ability to handle pressure was another defining trait. Bowling in championship matches, where every shot could be the difference between victory and defeat, was a challenge few handled with ease. Aulby thrived in those moments.

He didn’t show nerves, didn’t let emotions take over. His focus remained steady, his rhythm unchanged. In tight contests, where opponents faltered, he maintained composure.

One of the greatest examples of this came in 1995 at the USBC Masters.

The tournament is one of the most demanding on the professional circuit, testing skill, patience, and decision-making.

Aulby faced a formidable opponent in the final, tough conditions, high stakes. He delivered a performance that left no doubt about his place among the sport’s finest.

With pinpoint accuracy, he strung together strikes, leaving no opportunity for his rival to close the gap. That win made him the first bowler in history to complete the PBA Super Slam, winning all five major championships.

His adaptability allowed him to remain competitive for decades. Bowling changed over the years, new players brought different styles, and technology influenced how the game was played. Some struggled to keep up, but Aulby adjusted. He refined his technique, studied new approaches, and stayed relevant long after many of his early rivals had faded. He wasn’t just a champion for a few years, he won titles across multiple generations.

Winning in different conditions, against various styles of play, required intelligence as much as skill. He approached the game with a strategic mindset, always looking for ways to outthink the competition. Some relied on raw talent alone, but Aulby combined talent with analysis. He studied opponents, understood their strengths and weaknesses, and knew how to counter them.

The consistency he displayed throughout his career was rare. Many bowlers had moments of dominance, brief periods where they were the best.

Aulby remained a force for years, collecting titles long after his first success. The ability to sustain excellence is what separates the good from the great.

His control, awareness, and ability to perform in crucial situations made him one of the most complete bowlers the game had ever seen. Every title he won, every record he set, came from mastering the smallest details. The game never gave him anything for free, he earned it all with precision, intelligence, and a deep understanding of how to win.

Defined by Excellence

Despite achieving milestones that many could only dream of, Aulby never allowed success to change him. He remained the same calm, composed competitor he was at the start of his career. He did not court controversy, nor did he engage in rivalries built on theatrics. He simply bowled, and he bowled better than almost anyone else.

His impact on the sport extends beyond his titles. Young bowlers often look for role models who embody not just skill but also professionalism and humility.

Aulby provided that. While his game was a lesson in mechanics, his attitude was a reminder that success does not require arrogance.

Even in his later years, when newer generations began taking over the sport, Aulby continued to compete at a high level. He was not one to fade quietly; rather, he remained a respected force, proving that experience and adaptability could stand the test of time.

His final years on the professional tour were a testament to everything he had stood for, consistency, intelligence, and an unwavering dedication to the sport. He left behind not just records but an example of what it meant to be a true professional.
